Why is it that the more taboo something is, the more popular it becomes?

Humans are born to be rule-breakers, and people living in stricter, more repressed societies are no different. It’s a tale as old as time: from Church corruption to lying politicians, we’ve seen dogma and reputation lead to sweet social irony again and again.

A recent study by Mother Jones has unveiled that Pakistan—a country known for its strict and degrading laws regarding homosexuality—is also the #1 consumer of gay porn on the internet.

But why is that?

In a survey from the Pew Research Center, only 2% of Pakistanis polled answered “yes” to the question “Should society accept homosexuality?”

The results were not entirely surprising, as same-sex activities are illegal in Pakistan (though, reportedly, this is rarely enforced).

Under Pakistan Penal Code Article 377 (Unnatural Offenses), “Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment […] for a term which shall not be less than two years nor more than ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.”
