From Small Theaters to the World Stage

Best known for his role as the Emcee in Sam Mendes’s racy 1993 revival of Cabaret, 51-year-old Alan Cumming has led a decorated acting career for over 35 years both onstage, on screen, and as an activist.

Born and raised in Scotland, Cumming is known for his eccentricity as a character actor, but also for his dedication to many charities and causes, especially in the LGBT community.

This week, Cumming, who has previously hosted major ceremonies such as the 2015 Tony Awards, had the honor of being the host of the first United Nations LGBT Gala, which was held on May 16 in New York City and was sponsored by Outright Action International.

Regarding the ceremony, Cumming said, “I think it’s sort of like a little chink in the armor of bigotry on a worldwide level because it is symbolic that this is happening in this institution.” However, he expressed some frustration by saying it was “also kind of ridiculous at the same time that this is the first time anything like this has happened at the U.N.”
