A "before and after" like none other.
Drug addiction is a nationwide epidemic, but it can be difficult to understand the severity of the problem without seeing how much it can affect a human being. Addiction can be an extremely difficult topic to discuss, especially for those who have experienced it firsthand. This brave mother made the choice to share images of her experiences first hand to spread awareness of the hardship of addiction, and her before and after pictures are astounding.
Melissa Lee Matos
Nowadays, Melissa Lee Matos looks like a vibrant, healthy mother. A year and five months ago, before she got clean from her severe addiction to heroin, she looked almost unrecognizable. This West Virginia mom made the choice to show pictures of what she used to look like in the worst of her addiction, a time during which she describes herself as “sick” and “dying.” The transformation is amazing.
A New Woman
“This was what I looked like, daily, for years,” Melissa writes in her Facebook post. “This is what my husband dealt with. This is what my little girls walked in on. This is what my family and friends saw, on the rare occasions I left the house. I was SICK. I was DYING. I was so far gone I thought I could NEVER recover. I was so lost I couldn’t imagine a life without using. I just wanted to die. I didn’t realize I was hardly alive.”
“Images of a Dead Girl”
Melissa makes it clear that she’s not simply sharing these images as a before-and-after, but to reach out to people who need help.
She writes, “If you are currently in active addiction, this is my plea to you. Look at these pictures. Images of a dead girl. A needle junkie with a habit so fierce she spent days and nights in a self induced coma on her bathroom floor. A girl who would spend every cent on dope and forget she had kids to feed and take care of. A girl who lost every single thing she ever had. A girl who was so sick she thought she would never ever find a way out, until she did.”
