It was the saddest time in this mom's life.
Pregnancy is not an easy journey; there’s a plethora of complications that can arise, and tragedy can strike at any time for the woman or the fetus.
All one young woman wanted was to have children with her partner, but that wish became bittersweet after she learned that one of her twins was struggling to survive. She had to make a devastating choice in order to ensure that at least one of her children would make it. After her devastating experience, she wants everyone to hear her story and help fund research about this pregnancy complication.
Trying for Baby
Emma Dutton and Mark Prince had been trying to get pregnant for some time with no luck. One day, Emma felt like something was finally happening; she soon learned that she was seven weeks pregnant. She and Mark were elated.
At 18 weeks, there was even more good news: she was pregnant with identical twin boys! Emma told The Mirror, “We tried for ages to have a baby, so when we were told it was twins it was amazing.”
They decided to name the twins Elijah and Oliver.
After telling the couple that Emma was pregnant was twins, the doctor led her and Mark into a foreboding room. Emma stated, “There was a table and chairs and a little box of tissues and I just knew we were going to hear something awful. I knew it didn’t look right.”
Emma and Mark were told that the twins were in Stage 1 Twin to Twin Transfusion, meaning one twin was receiving more blood than the other, which can be fatal to both fetuses. Emma was able to have a laser ablation to correct the uneven blood flow, yet Elijah passed away at 20 weeks.
“To have that news and then be told one of them had died was just absolutely devastating. After that, I was convinced I’d lose the other one too. I couldn’t enjoy the rest of the pregnancy. I stopped talking to my belly and I didn’t want to bond with my baby in case he left us too,” said Emma.
Fighting for Life
Emma was devastated, but she had to make sure that Oliver had a chance at life. She was told that Oliver had a better chance of surviving if she kept her deceased baby in her womb for the duration of the pregnancy.
As she grieved the loss of one child, she tried to maintain some good spirits for the other child.
