Home for the Holidays
Few things are harder than being apart from your family for the holidays.
Yet for thousands of Americans, especially those with family members in the military, being together for special occasions like birthdays and holidays is a rare treat. Many spouses and parents are separated from their partners and children for months—if not years—at a time.
Sometimes, it takes a little TV magic and celebrity influence to make these small but meaningful miracles happen, and when they do, it’s sure to bring a tear to our eye.
When Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson paired up with Jimmy Fallon to surprise a military vet (an unsuspecting producer on The Tonight Show), the party was only getting started.
“If we ever have the opportunity to give back to our troops, I think we all should because, you know, we live and enjoy the life we have because of them,” Dwayne Johnson explained on a recent episode of The Tonight Show.
And it wasn’t just words.
After looking through the audience, Johnson still hasn’t found the vet he wants to surprise. So instead, he and Jimmy go even further back into the producer’s box, where they find Karina.
Karina is a producer on The Tonight Show, but she’s also an army vet. She can’t contain her laughter and some tears when the Rock and Fallon come into the crowded room to find her. She’s even more shocked that the whole thing was orchestrated without her knowledge.
But thanking Karina for her service was only part of the gig. The REAL surprise was what happened next. Guess who shows up…
After surprising Karina, the Rock goes on to talk about how Karina’s husband Todd is still active in the military. The couple met when they were both deployed in Iraq, and while Karina came home and started her civilian life, Todd is still a master sergeant in the Air Force. They haven’t seen each other in a year and a half.
We’re in just as must shock as Karina when Johnson says the words, “Karina, turn around and hug your husband.”
