Stop reading and start sleeping!
We all love catching our zzz’s, but it can be hard to do when you feel overwhelmed with something going on in your life or if you’re used to only getting a few short hours a night. There are a myriad of reasons that people forego sleep — work, play, or having a newborn baby to name a few — but the effect remains the same no matter the cause. If you feel that you’re not getting enough sleep, you need to start putting more effort into laying down, relaxing, and getting rest. You leave yourself open to a number of health risks if you don’t!
If your body is sleep deprived for too long, you’re putting yourself at risk for heart problems, diabetes, and stroke. Deep sleep helps to regulate the way your body regulates your blood pressure and the way you process glucose. Not entering deep states of sleep makes your body constantly work harder leading to these serious, sometimes fatal, issues.
Stress increases when you don’t get satisfying sleep regularly, but you may not have known that stress is perpetuated by the hormone cortisol. When you’ve got more cortisol coursing through your body than you normally would, the collagen in your skin diminishes leaving you “looking tired” and aging quickly.
It may behoove you to get your sleep so that you can ward off all of those sicknesses going around. Not sleeping well can disrupt your immune system, and a weakened immune system leads to catching colds, viruses, and the flu more often.
