“Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you who you are.” —Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
There aren’t many places worse than being in prison. Not only is your freedom taken away, but luxuries aren’t part of the deal or considered an option either. While criminals should suffer their crimes, is it cruel to make them eat the often disgusting food they are served? Not only are the portions tiny, but the quality is highly questionable. No one is saying they deserve a four star meal, but should we reexamine the prison food system?
Check out what prisoners have to eat while serving their time.
A lot of men and women lose lots of weight in prison. Even though many choose to lift weights, the portion sizes of the food leaves a lot to be desired. In state prisons, they get:
2-3 ounces of meat or meat byproduct
Half a cup of vegetables
Three-quarters of a cup of a starch
Three-quarters of a cup of salad with dressing
2 to 3 ounces of meat or gross meat byproduct is not only gross sounding but miniscule. Considering the average steak someone gets is 8 ounces. Cut that steak into quarters and you have yourself a prison sized portion of protein. Of course they don’t get steak, but three ounces of meat is equivalent to the size of a deck of cards.
