Jaden Smith: Wonderfully Misunderstood
It’s no new news that the Smith children are creative new-Hollywood celebrities on a totally other level. I mean, come on. Willow Smith was just nine years old when “Whip My Hair” took over the world. That was in 2010. Six years later, the 15-year-old singer, actress, and dancer still has an 11:30 curfew. How’s that for parenting skills?
And parenting certainly plays a large role in Willow and Jaden’s creative endeavors. In an interview on being a dad to Jaden, Will Smith said:
“You know, there’s a really powerful internal quality as an artist that as parents we encourage… As a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying, but [Jaden] is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think. He is 100 percent fearless.”
So where has this fearlessness landed 18-year-old Jaden? In a recent interview with Variety, Smith bared all on his gender-bending fashion sense, his sexually-ambiguous role in the new Netflix series The Get Down, and how he hopes his creative endeavors can help inspire young non-conformers everywhere.
But all this individuality hasn’t come without a cost for Jaden: “I always knew no one was going to understand me,” he explains.

One in a Million
“I’ve always looked at life differently,” Jaden said in his interview with Variety for their August, 2016 issue. “I always knew no one was going to understand me — since before I could talk — and that’s why I was so quiet. I was very calm, very to myself. I could tell I felt about life differently than other kids; I could tell by the way they treated me.”
Jaden’s Style Icons May Surprise You
Jaden’s gender non-conforming ways were made famous after he starred in the Louis Vuitton womenswear campaign in January 2016, but he’s been wearing dresses and skirts for nearly 10 years, he said in his Variety interview. Jade’s explanation for his fashion-forward ways? “I’ve always been super-duper fly and super-duper different,” he said.
So maybe it can come as a little bit of a surprise when he notes his fashion icons include Andy Warhol, the Joker (strange, seeing as he dressed as white Batman for both prom and the Kardashian/West wedding), Poseidon, and Spike from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
