This activity will truly make you take a step back to check your privilege.
What is privilege?
One of those words that seems to be thrown around left and right these days, privilege can mean different things for different people.
These days, the word privilege has become a trigger term that can easily make some angry while setting others on the defensive side. The very nature of these reactions go to show how tricky a subject this could be to handle.
Buzzfeed set up an activity a while back that helps both participants and onlookers visualize and understand just what privilege means in a physical and emotional manner, and it will have you examining your own life and circumstances afterwards. This is powerful stuff.
Would you try this with your friends or colleagues?
The Privilege Walk
Defined as “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people,” privilege in modern pedagogy has come to represent the unchosen but accepted rights that someone is born with, as well as all opportunities and circumstances that arise based on these rights.
Today, privilege is very much connected to the issues of race and social justice in the United States.
What It Is
According to the exercise, “the privilege walk is an activity designed to help people understand the effects of societal privileges.” Perhaps the best thing about the privilege walk is its simplicity, not to mention the way it turns often unseen situations into visible differences, albeit uncomfortable for some to participate in.
