Sometimes We’re Our Own Best Role Models

No running, no talking without being called on, following schedules, asking for permission for everything — school is where we learn most of our earliest life lessons. One thing you have to learn for yourself? How to break the rules.

Does this look like the face of a hero? Karen Routh is becoming the face of a parent-teacher standoff at the Skerne Park Academy in Darlington, England this week after a letter from the headteacher criticized parents for their wardrobe choices.

If you’re a parent, you know how delicate the teacher-student-parent balance can be, and how easy it is for a school to inadvertently anger families. In this case, it all started with a letter.

Did the headteacher have the right to send this note home?

Headteacher Kate Chisholm noticed a discomforting trend among the parents at Skerne Park Academy, and it turns out comfortable clothing was at its center.

“Basically it started with a few, then it went up to ten, then twenty [….] They were coming to parents’ evenings and Christmas concerts in [pajamas] as well. When it got to that point, I thought I might have to send a little letter out.”

Frustrated with parents’ choice of dress, namely, wearing their pajamas while dropping off or picking up their kids, headteacher Chisholm decided it was time to end the fad in order to set an example for the students.
