Last week police officer D. Herrejon of Houston, Texas was bucked from his partner and horse, Charlotte. Charlotte was struck by a cement truck after being spooked by traffic. Charlotte was a six-year-old mounted patrol horse who had worked with the Houston Police Department for the last four years. (You might want to grab a tissue for this part.) As she lay injured, Officer Herrejon refused to leave her side, comforting her and cradling her head.

Charlotte’s back legs were severally damaged. A vet was called to scene to euthanize her. The accident is currently under investigation, but police do not believe the driver of the truck is at fault. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Charlotte, an HPD Mounted Patrol horse, who died in the line of duty this morning in a motor vehicle accident,” The Houston Police Department said on a Facebook announcement.

Let’s look at happier times with Charlotte.

Get ready to tear up.
