There’s no doubt that astrophysicist Stephen Hawking is one of most smartest men on earth. Combine Hawking’s intellect and knowledge with the business savviness of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and a Russian billionaire named Yuri Milner, what do you get? A multimillion dollar project aimed at finding life in outer space.
These heavy hitters have the smarts and resources to go explore and try to find out if life outside of earth is really out there. Learn about this exciting new project that may change life as we know it.
“If the government is covering up knowledge of aliens, they are doing a better job of it than they do at anything else.” — Stephen Hawking
To the stars and beyond
This costly project is called Breakthrough Starshot, which will rely on tiny “nanocraft” that flies amazingly on sails pushed by laser beams of light through the universe. This ship is aimed to fly to the Alpha Centauri star system 25 trillion miles away on a twenty year mission. (That’s 4.37 light years.) To put that in perspective, it would take about 30,000 years to get there with today’s fastest spacecraft.
Each of these interstellar sailboats is expected to carry cameras and built in GPS to search deep space for habitable planets. Many astronomers believe that there is a reasonable chance of an Earth-like planet existing in Alpha Centauri’s three-star system.
