They’re Creepy and They’re Kooky
Americans have long been obsessed with appearing to have the perfect nuclear family in a never ending quest to keep up with the Joneses. Maybe that’s why the Addams family, an unconventionally macabre clan, has been so well received since their debut in 1938.
Originally created by cartoonist Charles Addams for The New Yorker, the satirical take on the American family was in part inspired by the Victorian homes in Addams’s hometown of Westfield, New Jersey. For several decades, the family existed only in single-panel cartoons before being adapted to television, film, video games, a musical, and, of course, the best-selling pinball machine of all time.
Known for their bizarre ways, fascination with death, social ostracism, but ultimately big hearts, the Addamses are among the most famous of fictional families. They are perhaps most memorable from the 1991 and 1993 films starring the likes of Raúl Juliá, Anjelica Huston, and Christina Ricci.
