Even though he wasn’t!

Almost 40% of working adults in America are renting their homes these days rather than owning them. This means that these people have to deal with a pesky landlord from month to month. In my many years of renting, I’ve come across a slew of personality types in my landlords. There’s the overbearing landlord that butts into your business a little too much, but will get the job done when you need it, the landlord that constantly complains about their tenants lifestyles, and the landlord that you only know exists because your rent check is deposited every month. Generally though, landlords are just minor annoyances that come with the renting life.

Every so often, a situation arises where the tenant needs to be evicted, and there are many legitimate reasons why. Some of these include late rent, lease agreement violations, illegal use of the property, and/or rehabilitation/demolition/sale of the property. Now we don’t know if “filming a gay porno” would ever be explicitly stated as a “no-no” in someone’s lease or be a good reason for eviction, but this YouTube star’s landlord obviously thought it was.

So what actually happened?

In the past ten years, the rise of YouTube has given creative people a new medium to express themselves. Occasionally these creative people and their videos bring in enough views that a person can create a living from the hobby. Felix Kjellberg, who goes by the YouTube name PewDiePie, is one of those lucky few that gained enough of an audience to make a career out of filming himself playing video games with loud, over-the-top commentary.

With 45 million subscribers, Felix is the most popular person on YouTube. To put this in perspective, Justin Bieber has 22 million subscribers while One Direction and Rihanna have 20 million each.

Felix was filming video one day when his landlord received a noise complaint from another tenant about Felix’s loud antics. A couple days later, Felix received an eviction notice. He tweeted, “I made a video, landlord thought I was having gay sex. Next day evicted w/o previous notice.” He continued, “Was planning to fight against the situation, but honestly happy to just move far away from that guy.”
