2. Santa Claus = Sweeney Todd?
One legend about Saint Nicholas says that there was an innkeeper or butcher who was facing hard times and decided to kill three patrons or three children in order to cook them into pies or to sell them as pork.
Saint Nicholas saw through his deceit, however, and is said to have revived the children from the dead. Today, most experts dismiss this as a dramatic misinterpretation of his helping the three sisters from becoming prostitutes.
1. Violent Jailbird
Ancient times weren’t easy for early Christians, but Saint Nicholas spent his fair share of times behind bars.
In one famous story, he met a religious man who he disagreed with so vehemently that St. Nicholas punched or slapped him across the face in front of a huge crowd of people. I can picture it now, “Peace be with you.” “And with your FACE.” *boom*
