Most crucially, when J.J. Abrams announced that there would be gay characters in the upcoming Star Wars movies, he basically implied he thought Threepio was already gay.
“When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity,” J.J. said last week. Abrams was the major force behind diversifying the cast in the latest Star Wars installment.
According to ComicBook.com, Abrams “believes gay characters already exist in the Star Wars universe—even if they don’t identify themselves as gay.”
Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron–a role which many hopefuls fancy could become the gay love interest–said he also thinks there are already gay characters in the Star Wars universe: “I won’t say with which character, but there was… Could be a droid.”

While admiring the Oscar statue’s similarities to himself, Threepio admitted, “Hmm, he is quite handsome I suppose,” before chasing after the other droids.
Is it vanity, admiration for another gilded icon? Or a sudden and sweet confirmation fans have been waiting for for nearly 40 years? For those set on labeling the eternally-worried droid, we might just have our answer.
