‘Do You Have to Tinkle?’ and Other Stuff Parents Say

“I Will Turn This Car Around!”

Parents across the planets are famous for their quirky sayings and other idiosyncrasies.

We learn them from our own parents and families, and by the time we grow up and have children of our own, the moment comes when we find ourselves parroting everything we were ever told as a kid. And more often than not, these common parenting phrases are EMBARRASSING.

In fact, when you think about it, they’re just as embarrassing for the parent as much as our kids, but this is what makes us human at the end of the day. The comedians behind the Tripp and Tyler YouTube channel put together a hilarious montage called “Poo-Poo Parents Say,” and it highlights the most famous and infamous sayings that ALL parents are familiar with.

“Don’t Make Me Count to Three.”

I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I heard this as a kid—and how many times it was followed by…

“Go to Your Room.”

I probably spent at least a third of my childhood punished in my bedroom. These days, being forced to hang out and do nothing but sleep or read doesn’t sound half bad…

“Do You Need to Go Potty?”

Is it me, or did your parents only ask you this in public? Who ever invented the word “potty” anyway?

“What Did I Just Say?”

The minutes your parents said “No,” you knew exactly what you wanted to do more than anything else: exactly the opposite of what they told you. Parents know this, however, so the often rhetorical “What did I just say?” becomes their biggest weapon against making sure you’re not ignoring them deliberately.

“Did You Brush?”

But I don’t WANNA’ brush!

“Go Ask Your Dad” and “Go Ask Your Mom”

The most confusing of parental rules. When you’re a kid, you felt like your parents simply did this to beat around the bush instead of just saying “No” flat out. As an adult, you’ve probably realized that (A) you don’t want to deal with every little thing your kids ask or say and (B) you don’t want to piss off your partner either! This is where grandmas come in handy.

This one goes hand in hand with “Are we there yet?”

“Because I Said So.”

Ah, the most dreaded of things a parent can possibly say. The one sentence all kids hate, and the one sentence I’m sure we’re all still going to use when we have children of our own. This dumb phrase holds no meaning whatsoever, but it merely reinforces the dictatorial role of parents, who don’t even need to give any reason or logic to their decisions except for saying “Because I said so.”
