Sounds state of the art and professional, right? Unfortunately for the Natural Environment Research Council, internet voters didn’t take the project so seriously.
While some realistic names did get submitted, such as Endeavour and RRS Henry Worsley (named for a British explorer who died in January while trying to cross the Antarctic), the internet showed its true colors rather quickly.
Among a plethora of humorous names like RRS Ice Ice Baby and It’s Bloody Cold Here, the most popular suggestion to date is RRS Boaty McBoatface.
NERC member Alison Robinson said, “We’ve had thousands of suggestions made on the website since we officially launched. Many of them reflect the importance of the ship’s scientific role by celebrating great British explorers and scientists. Others are more unusual but we’re pleased that people are embracing the idea in a spirit of fun.”
More suggestions can be made at NERC’s website through April 16.
Leave it to the internet to turn something serious into something silly. But really, what did NERC expect?

In the wake of the viral outpouring the christen the ship with a ridiculous name, a railway service between Portsmouth and Waterloo temporarily renamed itself “Trainy McTrainface.”
It’s great to see people having fun. Now let’s see how seriously NERC takes the popular vote!
