You want us to paint with what?!
Jess says she is “quite an open-minded person.” It’s hard to disagree with her on that. She says she was nervous about how people would react to her paintings because she knows that period blood is stereotypically gross. She said, “I was scared to hear what they thought.” As you can imagine, she was right. A lot of people are disgusted by her work. “They’ve said they feel uncomfortable and been disturbed by it,” she says. She’s been getting negative feedback online, even from friends. “Some of my male flat mates said they had to unfollow me on social media because they couldn’t look at my art.”
Everyone should try!
Jess says not everyone has a negative reaction. Some people “have got used to it and have defended me when they’ve heard people being negative.” Following her feminist art theme, she also makes clay vaginas. She doesn’t think her art is gross or unhygienic. She says this method has been used to thousands of years and is completely natural. “My pictures aren’t disgusting and neither is painting with the blood…Some people think the paintings will stink, but painting with blood doesn’t smell, nor does my artwork.” She wants you to try it too, if you’re female, that is. “I think all women should try painting with their blood. It’s cathartic.”
