Poppy the Medical Miracle
Poppy Smith was born very premature on December 17th, 2014. She weighed only two pounds!
Born so early, Poppy faced a lot of medical issues. She was born with a condition called Moebius syndrome. The condition makes it difficult for her to produce facial expressions. She struggles to move her mouth and eyebrows. The cause of thIS condition remains a mystery.
However, miracles can happen and Poppy is proof. Find out why she is baffling doctors!
Poppy spent three months in the neonatal ward after her birth and before she was able to go home with her parents, Amy and Stephen. Poppy also has two older siblings, Elisha and Alfie.
Turn for the Worst
Moebius syndrome varies case by case in level of severity. The doctors warned that Poppy may never be able to walk or talk. However, she began to walk when she was 15 months old! “It was amazing to see her doing all those things,” Stephen reveals.
Stephen says that her condition was proving daily. That’s why the family was shocked when Poppy’s health took a turn for the worst.
Poppy had been ill before, as to be expected. Before she was even one-year-old she had experienced respiratory and cardiac arrest. Despite these setbacks, her health was increasing. That is, until one morning when Amy went into her room. Amy noticed that Poppy was unresponsive.
“We could feel her heartbeat, but she was unresponsive. We knew there was something seriously wrong. She was breathing but she was sort of gasping for air,” Stephen says.
