Learn what it was like to play everyone's favorite purple dinosaur.
David Joyner played the titular purple dinosaur on Barney & Friends for an entire decade from 1991 to 2001. The character actor is finally sharing what it was like inside the suit.
In a new video from Tech Insider, Joyner revealed the inner workings of the dinosaur sensation who spread a message of positivity for PBS. Among the things he shared were insights to his life before and after Barney, how he worked around the unwieldy suit and how he feels about the legacy of the show that’s taught millions of children to sing “I love you.”
A Life Before Barney
Joyner held several careers before becoming one of the biggest entertainers of children on the planet. In the video, Joyner says that he has a degree in electronic engineering technology and was a software analyst at Texas Instruments.
Barney wasn’t his first gig where he had to keep children’s attention. Joyner performed as a “live mannequin” in the mall. “I would move mechanically and people would literally bring their children, set them on the mall floor and go shop,” he said.
An Odd Dream
Joyner dreamed, the night before his Barney audition, that he had to resuscitate the character after the dino had fallen unconscious. Joyner says he took it as a sign that he had to “breathe life” into the role.
