In a super rad corner of outer space...
Browsing the internet can feel like exploring space itself.
With the seemingly infinite number of sites, links, videos, articles, and wormholes we can fall into, it’s easy to set out to do one small thing, and before you know it, hours have gone by.
But those hours don’t have to be wasted. Are you mainly online for work? Are you just on out of sheer boredom? Or, like most of us, are you looking for something entertaining to pass the time? Look no further.
Hands down, one of the best video series on the internet is Bad Lip Reading (BLR). Easily one of the more ingenious channels on YouTube, BLR started up in 2011 and has been created ever since by an anonymous producer who said he first got the idea because his mother suffers from hearing loss, and he was amazed by how skilled she was at lip reading.
Seven years later, and Bad Lip Reading has branched out from viral music videos to include fan favorites like TV shows, sports, politics, and—of course—movies.
Today we’re bringing you the best of Bad Lip Reading: original Star Wars trilogy edition. With the voice talents of Jack Black, Maya Rudolph, and Bill Hader, you can’t go wrong. Which one is your favorite?
“A New Hope”
If you’ve never seen any of the Star Wars Bad Lip Reading videos, you might not know what to expect, and so the humor is going to come at you FAST.
Right off the bat, points come from hearing Vader’s voice (Jack Black) and learning about his ridiculous subplot of sending “helmet pics” to Leia. As the rest of the characters roll out, you need a preliminary watch-through just to take in all the new voices and personalities they’ve assigned to each of them. It’s comedic gold.
Nothing against Mark Hamill, but given Luke’s angsty attitude—especially in Episode IV—one of the best things this video does is transform the young Skywalker into some dumb, fratty kid who complains in nearly every scene. Not too far off from the source material…
Just as we’re cracking up that Han is some skeezy stoner type, we see Chewbacca at 3’18” and hear what he very well might sound like if he could do more than make his iconic, guttural growl.
Must-watch moments: The stormtroopers in Mos Eisley (1’40”); Leia’s “No, person” shutdown of Luke’s advances (4’14”); and the incredible new sound effects of the lightsaber duel (4’41”).
A humble introduction to BLR’s Star Wars series, it only gets better from here.
“Return of the Jedi”
This final installment starts off strong with Bill Hader’s new rendition of Bib Fortuna, who C-3PO quickly dubs “Creepy McNightmare.” Hader really steals the show this time around with his salivating yet posh and soulful Jabba (53″) and Nien Nunb later on.
Maya Rudolph also shines here, especially when we meet the reimagined Mon Mothma, who know seems more like a teenage girl than a Rebel leader.
Must-watch moments: Luke and Obi-Wan talk music (2’09”); Mon Mothma’s boy problems (2’50”) and Admiral Ackbar’s incredible inability to speak (3’00”); Luke and Vader’s loose screws (4’47”); the overdramatic emperor (5’15”); too much fun in the cockpit (5’39”).
While it’s definitely hilarious, the many slow moments throughout this video leave us longing for more. Luckily, we have it…
