Taking a stand
How quickly we forget where we come from.
As we grow older, it’s disheartening to see just how hypocritical we can all be, though some to a greater extent than others. And so much of our own hypocrisy boils down to remembering just who we are and where we come from.
But for their much-anticipated annual Super Bowl commercial, Anheuser-Busch is going back to their roots to take a stab at the current xenophobia and islamophobia sweeping our country, reminding us that what we’re seeing is nothing new, only the victims have become the oppressors.
We still haven’t learned, but hopefully this commercial will open some eyes.
Super Bowl Commercials
It’s no secret that the Super Bowl isn’t only about football.
According to last year’s numbers, more 18-30 year olds prefer the commercials to the game itself. And it’s no surprise.
It’s that time of year when companies spend millions for 30-second time slots— but it often works. A good commercial could have people talking for weeks… or years!
Though we’re still a few days away from the big game, some commercials have started to air, and we know people will be talking about Budweiser’s latest ad.
Super Bowling Over
We’re living through some troubling times. People’s own jaded beliefs seem to be trumping the basic rights of others, our elected and appointed politicians repeatedly make themselves appear to be incompetent, and various news sources are reporting the imminent end of days.
But hey, these problems don’t affect me, right? Lolz. Anywho, the Super Bowl is on this weekend, so I will just watch that to drown out the cries of the snowflakes outside.
Unfortunately for those working so hard to prove that ignorant is bliss, the Super Bowl this year is shaping up to be anything but a distraction from the real world.
“Born the Hard Way”
From Lady Gaga’s halftime performance to the fact that it turns out Robert Kraft is basically BFFs with Trump himself, this Super Bowl is bound to remind us that despite our many great accomplishments, America is hurting right now. And not even the most-watched television event of the year could bring us back together that easily. There is no escaping the many problems plaguing the country today, even for those who claim there aren’t any real problems to begin with and that people should stop complaining. Must be nice! ¯_(ツ)_/¯
But the most obvious sign we’ve seen so far that this Super Bowl is going to get political is Anheuser-Busch’s 2017 commercial. Always among the most popular ads of the night, Budweiser has run the full gamut of emotions, from laughter to tears and more, in their commercials. This year brings us something new, however, and hopefully it will make even the staunchest and disconnected of Americans stop and think.
Entitled “Born the Hard Way,” this year’s commercial brings us the story of an immigrant. His name? Adolphus Busch. That’s right: The brand is using its own story to bring us some heavy-hitting commentary on our current immigration situation.
