A traffic stop to remember
Nobody wants to get pulled over while driving.
The feeling that you have done something wrong or illegal, even if you know you have not, can cause your palms to start to sweat, your stomach to drop, and your brain to panic. If you’ve ever been pulled over on the side of the road with those blinding lights flashing behind you and other drivers staring as they pass, you know why.
Given the state of affairs in our country at the moment, some of us have much more to fear than others when police are involved, even during the most routine of traffic stops. Some traffic stops can end up being anything other than what you expected, and this story is no different.
“I need you to step out”
In this viral video, which is trending again this week, we see both the dashcam and bodycam footage from a police officer in Missouri.
If you’ve watched other traffic stops, you know the sense of dread that can accompany a police officer pulling people over and asked them to exit the vehicle. While talking to the driver, we hear the officer say the man behind the wheel didn’t use his turn signal, and that there were also complaints about a reckless driver matching the description of his black Corvette.
Following routine, the cop has the driver exit the vehicle before patting him down and asking him to get on his knees behind the car. However, he also asks the woman in the passenger seat to leave the vehicle and come around back to where the driver is. You know by this point that something is amiss.
That’s when the office pats down the driver and says, “Just what I expected. You’re gonna do LIFE for this. Get on your knees and hands behind your back. I need to go get my camera for evidence.”
After forcing both passengers to wait behind the car, the cop comes back with his bodycam recording, and that’s when the situation reveals itself: a total setup. The point being?
The driver, already down on his knees, pulls out an engagement ring.
As soon as the woman realizes what’s going on, she cries a bit before accepting the man’s proposal. At the end of the video, the newly-engaged couple shares their emotions. Even the man, Austin, who was of course in on it, admits that he was scared and felt like he was getting arrested. The woman, Sam, admits she was angry at the officer because she knew they hadn’t done anything wrong. Little did she know…
They then thank the people involved, specifically the Sheriff’s Department for making it possible.
