She may never be able to live this down
The cardinal rule of working in the food and beverage industry is that you shouldn’t tamper with peoples’ food. As it turns out, even joking about it can ruin your career.
An English chef has received several threats on her life — and has resigned from the restaurants she owns — after making an astonishing claim on social media about messing with a diner’s food. Though there was no actual foul play, she may never be able to work in a restaurant ever again.
Chef Laura Goodman is the head chef and co-owner of Carlini in Shifnal, Shropshire, England. She also owns a second restaurant in Albrighton. Yet, she isn’t currently working at either of them.
On December 29, Laura made a special vegan meal for a group of diners who requested it beforehand. They went so far as to request that she call them, giving them the opportunity to explain what they wanted to their exact specifications. In turn, Laura promised them a fantastic, meat and dairy-free meal when they came in.
However, when they finally arrived, they didn’t take all of her offerings.
“Instead when they did come in they only ordered two dishes off the standard menu, a roasted cauliflower dish and a margherita pizza which obviously has buffalo mozzarella cheese,” her fiancé and business partner Michael Gale explained to The Telegraph.
Upset with the difficult group of customers who demanded vegan food but didn’t eat it, she took to Facebook to vent. “Spiked a vegan a few hours ago,” she wrote on a page called “The Boring Group.” Later, she wrote, “Pious, judgmental vegan (who I spent all day cooking for) has gone to bed, still believing she’s a vegan.”
Rants Gone Wrong
Facebook users were horrified by the posts, thinking that she served her vegan diners meat or dairy products without their knowledge. Her comments received massive backlash online. They even lead some people to threaten her life.
Michael tried to explain what went through Laura’s mind when she wrote the incendiary remarks. He told The Sun, “At the time of making the post, it was in the small hours of the morning, and Laura had probably had too much to drink and was angry that they hadn’t chosen to have the dishes that she had prepared for them.”
“It was a stupid remark in a closed group. She didn’t expect it to go viral,” he added.
Laura has disappeared from social media and has hardly spoken with the press. Michael tried to offer apologies on her behalf, though no one took his words to heart.
“She’s horrified by what she’s done, embarrassed and deeply sorry. She’s almost suicidal,” he claimed. “Laura bent over backwards to try and come up with something special for them, and it’s so sad that it’s ended like this.”
Trip Advisor has disallowed people from commenting on Carlini’s page because of the influx of negative reviews. Due to an influx of fake reservations and the waitstaff being harassed — one waitress’ mother was even drug into things — both restaurants are closed right now and will reopen soon.
A spokesperson for Carlini wrote a statement, saying that Laura resigned from both of the restaurants that she owns. “As part of a pre-planned recruitment drive, Carlini is also recruiting for an additional head chef to work across both its restaurants in Shropshire,” the statement held.
