Since its founding in 1961, CoverGirl has been appointing female celebrities from all over the world to be spokeswomen for their brand. We’ve watched the company shatter societal norms before: like when they became the first major cosmetic company to sign a black model to an exclusive contract in 1992. Canadian Lana Ogilv paved the way for the mainly caucasian targeted company to branch out into other ethnically diverse markets.
Once again, CoverGirl is making history by appointing their first male CoverGirl spokesperson and it’s not hard to see why!
Meet James Charles
If you think James looks familiar but don’t know why, you probably saw his post that went viral after his picture day at school. He admitted that he had brought his own light ring to the portrait session and asked for a do-over seeing as he didn’t like how the originals turned out.
Damn that highlighter is poppin.
Social Media Star
Aside from his viral post, James rose to fame on social media by creating YouTube videos teaching men and women how to apply makeup. He launched his channel on Dec. 1, 2015 and already has more than 75,000 followers. His Instagram is even more astounding with over half a million followers.
Last night, after a photoshoot with the company, pop singer Katy Perry took the time to announce the historic news that James is CoverGirl’s first official male spokesperson via Instagram.
Her post read: “Just wrapped another great @COVERGIRL shoot. Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles! Follow him @JCharlesBeauty! #COVERGIRLJames #glam”
James was understandably even more excited about the news.
