Straight From A Horror Movie
Soon rumors began circulating that physicians at Danvers were using extreme and inhumane methods to control its teeming population. Thse measures included overdosing patients on insulin and violent shock treatment. Despite this, it wasn’t until 1992 that Danver was shut down.
Waverly Hills is considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in America, and it’s clear why when you know its history. It was constructed as a hospital to treat tuberculosis patients before there was much understanding of the disease in the medical community. This resulted in some horrific treatment methods that would be considered barbaric by modern standards.
In an effort to treat tuberculosis, doctors would sometimes remove ribs and muscles or insert balloons into the lungs to help them expand. As a result of these methods, the facility had several deaths to deal with, which were sent down what they called a “body chute.”
The estimates of how many died at the hands of these practices range between 150 to 63,000 a year.
