Straight From A Horror Movie
Overbrook New Jersey
Overbrook was an insane asylum instituted in New Jersey that was open for a length of time despite the conditions. Like many other asylums at the time, one of its biggest problems was that it had too many patients and too few staff members, resulting in some grisly deaths.
Death by Neglect
As a result of this improper attention to patients, many of the patients died from neglect. Specifically, several froze to death in their own beds because there wasn’t enough staff to care for them. Others managed to escape, and their fates remain unknown. The institution remained open until the 1970s.
Willowbrook Staten Island
Willowbrook struggled with a similar problem of too many patients and not enough staff. It was so bad that in the 1960’s, Robert Kennedy himself called the conditions “zoo-like” after touring the institution. It wasn’t until a journalist by the name of Geraldo Rivera investigated that the true horrors came to light.
