But she's not done fighting for what's right
In parts of the world that are still developing, acid attacks are increasing in number and severity. They’re a popular form of punishment among people who want to seek revenge and permanently scar their victims. In India, one young woman was severely injured when acid was thrown on her face and body; she is telling her story to the world in hopes that her abuser will finally be jailed, hoping that his serious trafficking crimes will not go unnoticed.
The most horrifying aspect of this case, however, is the fact that the young woman’s abuser was her own father.
A Life of Crime
Twenty-year-old Khushboo Devi of Mathura, India would not be silent after her own father maliciously attacked her as she slept.
She had been witnessing her father Manik Chandra’s crimes all of her life, but she never fully understood the horror of his ways until she became just another one of his victims. Clearly, he did not care for her as a daughter; she was simply a commodity.
Buying and Selling
Khushboo explained about Manik, “He bought girls and then sold them at a higher price for many years. He used to share everything with me thinking I’d keep his secrets. He thought that if he killed me his secrets would be safe. He is a very cruel man. I saw him marry three girls without even divorcing my mother. Then he sold them. He used to charm these girls and marry them before getting a good rate and selling them to other men.”
Khushboo’s mom Sarita was only in her teens when she gave birth to her daughter; she spent years being mentally and physically abused by Manik before leaving him in 2007.
Even worse than being a trafficker to these young women and an abusive husband, he attempted to sell his own daughters.
At age 14, Khushboo was basically sold to a plumber named Vinod; Manik gave him his daughter for marriage because he owed the plumber money. Khushboo said, “I initially opposed the marriage. I begged him to stop but I knew I couldn’t do much. My mother said Vinod was a good man so it was a good arrangement. And thankfully after all these years I am happily married to Vinod.”
The couple has a three-year-old girl, but Khushboo didn’t want the same arrangement to happen to her sister. Khushboo’s increasing ire over her father’s crimes towards women soon reached a boiling point.
