She did nothing wrong, but she paid the ultimate price
It’s never easy being the parent of a newborn, but there was no indication that Jayne Pearce was doing a bad job of raising her little boy when the police arrested her for trying to end his life.
In a strange, cruel twist of events, her so-called friends put up a false Facebook post, ruining her life forever. How could the justice system fail this young mother so badly that she turned to the dangerous behaviors that ended up stopping her heart?
A Young Mother
Jayne Pearce was the 23-year-old mom of a three-month-old infant; she loved him dearly and would have done anything for him. Jayne brought her little one to a friend’s house, where Leonie Hampson-Ogden and Shauna Stanway were also hanging out. These two were no friends to Jayne.
21-year-old Shauna went upstairs alone to see the baby. She then suggested to 24-year-old Leonie that the sleeping baby was a little too covered up by a blanket that was near the child’s face.
Afterwards, Leonie logged into Jayne’s Facebook account and wrote: “I think I need sectioning, can’t believe I just tried killing a 12-week-old baby by suffocating it, feeling guilty.”
Shauna took a screenshot of the forged post and brought it to the police in order to manipulate the situation. Though there was no evidence that the baby was harmed and though Jayne knew nothing about the strange post, she was arrested for the attempted murder of her child.
