They are outraged
When it comes to good music, especially hip-hop, our president is pretty familiar. Earlier this summer, the head of our country released day and night playlists featuring sounds from Prince, Wale, Nas and Janet Jackson, just to name a few. Not to mention, he and his wife Michelle are like BFFs with the biggest names in music, Jay-Z and Beyoncé. He’s just an all around cool guy.
So when Chinese-Americans attempt to force him to ban a rap song by a very popular rapper, we can only imagine how awkward this will be. Music, not only rap music, is all about expressing oneself. Whether the stories told are true or not, they add to the rapper’s character. But I must admit, this one may have gone too far.
“Meet the Flockers”
In 2014, rapper YG released “Meet the Flockers,” a song that details how to rob Chinese Americans. To YG it may have been just a song, but to actual Chinese-Americans, it was a threat. And now, they want President Obama to take action against the track. A petition was formed and signed by over 50,000 calling Prez Obama to ban the song from the public and to investigate YG.
Teaching How to Rob
The song opens up with the lyrics, “First, you find a house and scope it out / Find a Chinese neighborhood, cause they don’t believe in bank accounts.” It goes on and give play-by-play instructions on how to burglarize the home.
The track was originally released on YG’s debut album, My Crazy Life, but recently surfaced after Fox 11, an L.A.-based station aired a segment on how Chinese-Americans suspect that their businesses are being targeted under the influence of YG’s song. The news made its way to Chinese internet users, and they were not happy at all.
Groups were formed, and they went straight to the U.S. Attorney’s office and FBI to get the song removed, but it was protected under the First Amendment, freedom of speech. So instead, they aired their frustrations out on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo. Some spoke about the issue of racism, saying that Chinese-Americans are stereotyped more than African-Americans and that they aren’t defended.
There was a recent incident in Georgia that made Chinese-Americans even more enraged…
