Body cams are a really good idea
With the political world very focused on police decisions and actions, bodycams have become a more and more common part of police protocol. Designed to ensure that police are sticking to procedure and to catch criminals in the act, they often provide crucial evidence in criminal cases.
In this instance, there’s no question who was at fault. A police officer nearly died after apparently enraging a teenager… all for giving him a ticket!
When Warden David Drury stopped to issue a ticket, it seemed like it couldn’t be farther from high-stakes. The teenager, Michael Johnson, had his car parked on zig-zags, which denotes an area where cars are not allowed to park.
Drury stopped to issue a ticket, and that’s where things escalated.
Rather than accepting the ticket, the footage shows Johnson revving the engine of his Vauxhall Omega.
Johnson acts before Drury can decide to defend himself or flee. When faced with a 2-ton car, there isn’t much the officer could have done.
A Last Defense
Drury attempts to put his hands up, but Johnson mows him over with his car, knocking him off his feet. Drury is thrown over the bonnet, landing on the ground.
He immediately calls in backup, telling responders that he’d just been runover.
