A New Concept
While pre-mature children have been kept in incubation systems after birth, this concept of creating a womb-like system is entirely different, and the scientists essentially had to start from scratch.
They experimented with many different systems before they landed on the most likely candidate to further the technology. They’ve had excellent success with the chosen system.
The researchers working on the fake womb project created a plastic bag filled with a lab-produced fluid that is a replication of amniotic fluid that has a hook-up for the umbilical cord.
The umbilical cord is fed to an external oxygenator that performs the same function that a mother’s placenta would. The fetus’s own heart pumps it’s own blood through it’s body then through the external system, and it “breathes” the oxygen-rich faux amniotic fluid.
The latest studies successfully took lamb fetuses to term; they were placed in the bags at a time that’s equivalent to a human fetus at 23 or 24 weeks gestation.
For 28 days, the lambs developed naturally. This success has created hope for pre-term humans.
