Would you say yes to a surprise wedding?
Have you ever tried to plan a surprise party? It’s not easy to covertly inform friends and family of the celebration without anyone letting it slip to the guest of honor. And you also have to secretly plan the event without them knowing. It’s quite an undertaking and a lot of work.
Now imagine doing that, but the party is a wedding where the bride-to-be is the one getting the surprise. She didn’t even see the proposal coming, let alone expect a pre-planned wedding the very next day. She said yes to the engagement, but then what happened might have you in tears… or raging.
This English couple are amazingly adventurous.
Scott Williams, 42, and his girlfriend of two years, Michelle, were vacationing in Santorini, Greece. He had planned a family vacation to try to comfort Michelle, 37, who had recently lost her mother. Her two teenage children, brother, sister, and dad came along.
“My dad, Michael, is 79 and he hasn’t been on a plane since he was in the army, back in 1957. When the others told me dad was coming, I was surprised, but thought it would be lovely.” Michelle said. “I had absolutely no idea that anything else was going on. I just thought it was a big family holiday.”
What was going on was that Scott was planning to propose to Michelle while in Greece. And everyone in the family knew about it except for her.
“We were sitting there enjoying the views. We were about to leave to go back to the hotel, but Scott turned to me and said, ‘I want to do this first.’ He got down on one knee and proposed to me,” Michelle said. “I had always wanted to get married, but never even considered that he might propose then. I was so shocked, but of course I said yes straight away.”
Seconds after Michelle said “yes”, she heard a large crowd cheering. When she turned around, there were over 50 friends and family waving from the rooftop of the building behind them.
“By the way, the wedding is tomorrow,” Scott casually mentioned to his new fiancé.
Many girls and women have their dream weddings already mapped out in their heads: What kind of flowers, what cut the dress will be, seating arrangements, and more. Michelle isn’t one of those women. “I wasn’t worried about anything, though, because I knew he would do a good job,” she said.
Michelle woke up not knowing what to expect. What would she wear?!
Scott had came up with an ingenious ploy: He had a friend who owns a bridal dress shop. Nine months before the trip, the shop owner asked Michelle to come in and be a fit model for their new inventory.
“I tried it on and I started crying, because I was thinking of my mum and I wanted her to see me in a wedding dress, but I just kept saying, ‘I’m not even getting married.'” Michelle had no idea it was really for ulterior motives.
The shop owner came to Santorini with Michelle’s favorite gown as well as an additional dress for the reception. What’s more is that Scott had arranged hair and makeup for Michelle and her eight bridesmaids, all of whom were wearing matching light pink dresses.
Scott knew how much Michelle was still mourning her mother, so he had a photo of her blown up and displayed at the wedding.
“It made me feel like she was with us. He had just done so many little thoughtful things,” she said.
Scott seemed to have every detail planned for the rooftop wedding, including a professional photographer and cake. He started planning everything back in January. “I knew I could do it and I did have a lot of help but it was a lovely day. There were some moments where I thought she was going to find out but luckily she never caught on. I knew she would say yes and I was so glad she did,” he said.
Michelle said her wedding was “perfect” and “there was nothing I would have done differently.”
Cheers to the happy couple!
