Once pristine and polished for the international crowds, the stadiums today look like they haven’t been used years.
Take a Seat
Back inside Maracanã, you can see the dirty, torn-up pitch, but something else that will catch a keen eye is all the dark spots among the seats: People notoriously looted seats from the stadium after the Olympics were over. Who wouldn’t want their own piece of history?
Check out this aerial view of the ghost town that is the Barra Olympic Park down in Rio de Janeiro. Empty parking lots, empty fields, empty courts, empty pitches, empty stadiums… everything is empty. The people of Rio were told that the park would be open to them and heavily utilized after the Olympic Games were over, but you can see from this pictures that that isn’t 100% the case. While numerous sporting events have been held there since, and although some areas are for public use, the majority of the area goes unused… all of this after Brazil spent upwards of $20 billion on the event.
