There's no shame in his game.
Do you ever put your phone down?
If you’re anything like me, from the time you wake up in the morning to the time you go to bed at night, your phone is always somewhere on your person. (I even keep my phone in bed with my while it charges overnight, and it sits on my desk at work.)
Too much? Maybe. But considering how my phone is always an arm’s length away (except for when I’m in the shower), I rarely take it out while eating, and when I’m talking to a friend, family member, or colleague, you can bet they have my full attention.
That being said, when it comes to my own, er, private time, you know that I’m on my phone catching up on everything I might have missed out on during the day.
For one lucky man, some good old “screen time” while on the toilet ended up being the luckiest moment of his life, and it’s all thanks to HQ Trivia’s recent winner-takes-all challenge.
We live in the age of the app.
From day to day, month to month, and year to year, apps come and go and, even for a brief moment in time, can change our life. How do you organize your smart phone? Whether by color, name, or how often you use them, apps are everywhere, giving us access to the sites, platforms, and activities we use to pass so much of our time. While some apps are in it for the long haul (think Facebook, Instagram, or even your calendar or camera), others are fleeting, fifteen seconds of famers.
But right now, HQ Trivia is the hot app in town. Released in August 2017, this live game show airs at 9 pm Eastern every night and 3 pm eastern on weekdays. Typically, it features 12 questions that grow increasingly difficult in nature, ultimately resulting in the multiple survivors splitting the cash earnings.
And if we’re lucky, it’s hosted by none other than Quiz Daddy himself, Scott Rogowsky.
On Sunday, March 11, HQ Trivia hosted a special winner-takes-all edition with a $25,000 jackpot prize. This new style of gameplay meant that Scott would keep asking questions until only one player was left in the game. With 1.88 million players to start, most of us would realize just how smaller our chances were, but that didn’t stop Mikey Elkins.
Elkins, a 25-year-old PE teaching in North Carolina, said he normally plays HQ “just for fun.” According to Buzzfeed, “Every day a 3 pm me and my coworkers play. I never win anything… I never get past question six.”
Sunday March 11 was no different for Mikey, who saw the alert on his phone and decided to play the special edition. After all, he had nothing better to do…
…because he was sitting on the toilet, “doing [his] business.”
“Doing My Business”
Like the rest of the civilized world, Mikey Elkins passes the time on his phone while on the toilet. Unlike the rest of the world, this was Elkins’ lucky night.
Apparently, as the game progressed and Mikey kept getting further, his wife came to find out if he was okay (we’ve all been there). “You won’t believe it,” he yelled out to her, “There are nine people left!” So she did the only natural thing and came into the bathroom to join him.
After just 18 questions, Mikey was the sole winner of the $25,000 jackpot. “I stood up and started yelling,” Elkins recalled. He then called his younger sister to celebrate.
His secret? Playing the guessing game. “For questions I didn’t know I went with my first instinct.” We should all be so lucky.
Since he was announced as the winner at 9:38 pm, Elkins created a Twitter account to help spread the news, but he has already been impersonated on multiple fake accounts. The price of fame!
According to Elkins, the money will be “something to get [him] through” the summer when he does not receive paychecks from school. He also said he will put the money towards a proper honeymoon with his wife. Congratulations to Mikey on his win!
