Her apology is falling on deaf ears
When you’re in the spotlight, everything you say is recorded, published, and scrutinized. It can be an unfair portrayal of a person, or it can show us who they truly are behind that smiling face. Gospel singer and preacher Kim Burrell is now learning exactly what that feels like since her fire-and-brimstone sermon about the perils of homosexuality has been seen by more than just her parishioners. But she’s trying to explain that it’s not necessarily her judgment, just the one she’s been told to preach.
Upward and Onwards
Kim Burrell has long been making music about the glory of God, and her talents have not gone unnoticed. The Senior Eldress of The Love & Liberty Fellowship Pentecostal Overcoming Holy Church was asked to make music with the likes of R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, and Harry Connick, Jr.
More recently, she was tapped by Pharrell Williams to be a part of the song “I See Victory” for the film Hidden Figures, a movie about a group of black female employees who were mistreated at NASA before the Civil Rights era. They were set to appear on Ellen DeGeneres’s popular show to perform the song this week, but her recent behavior has come back to haunt her.
In a Facebook Live video, Kim Burrell is seen preaching a sermon at church that is hyperfocused on the sinfulness of homosexuality. But it’s not just that; Kim goes so far as to say, “Anyone in this room who is filled with the homosexual spirit, beg God to free you. That perverted homosexual spirit is a spirit of delusion and confusion and has deceived many men and women, and it’s caused a stain on the body of Christ.”
She goes on to use the word “pervert” many times in her fiery sermon and discusses the sinfulness of putting another man’s genitals in your face in explicit terms. She screams “You’re perverted!” several times.
While Christian opinion is slowly changing to at least tolerate homosexuality, saying it’s a perversion of nature is still prevalent in many Christian sects.
Not Having It
Her comments have inspired ire from fellow musical artists, from other celebrities, and even from her fans who won’t accept her hateful words. She was told that she couldn’t appear on Ellen, but you would think that Kim would refuse to be on the show anyway considering Ellen DeGeneres is a proud gay woman that nearly ruined her career just to tell the world who she really was.
But Kim, perhaps realizing how much she can lose because of her rant, is trying to backtrack now, and she explained her hate-filled speech like this…
