This guy nailed it
A Dallas area Lyft driver is making headlines after he took a stand, denying a drunk woman a ride… But they’re not the headlines that you’re imagining. Sure, when you read “male Lyft driver denies drunk woman a ride home,” some alarm bells probably start to go off. I know that they did for me.
Was it because of her clothes?
Did he think she was being “unladylike”?
Was he just being an a**hole?
They’re all fair questions. It turns out, though, that he had a really good reason, one we can all get behind.
A few weeks ago, Tro’juan Henderson took a stand on violence against women in an unexpected way. Late at night on April 11th, 2017, the Dallas-area Lyft driver answered a ride request and arrived to find three young women with a unique request.
See, according to Henderson, one of the women was intoxicated to the point of near unconsciousness. Her two friends gave him her apartment number and asked him if he would take her key, drive her home, then take the severely intoxicated young women into her home. Alone. They wanted to leave her in his care — the care of a total and complete stranger.
Henderson explains in a video he posted to Twitter the following day that he denied the request, not because the woman was drunk — he says himself that having a “designated driver on-call” is part of the allure of Lyft and he drives drunk people all the time — rather, he denied it for the woman’s own safety. Henderson, along with much of the Internet, was appalled that the friends would even ask.
And he’s right.
