The grass is always greener
It’s easy to make judgements when you don’t know the full story, and we’re all guilty of it. After all, it’s human nature to be curious about others. And that’s one of the many reasons why social media has taken our species by storm over the past decade or so.
Of course, one of the many downsides of social media—depending on the user—is that we can end up spending countless hours of our own lives sitting and watching or reading about the lives of others. What are they wearing? Where are they going? Who are they dating? Who are they fighting with? Facebook and other forms of social media provide little windows into the lives of others, so we pass judgements and make decisions accordingly. But what we often forget is that people on social media have the ability to filter their life any way they choose.
The truth is that we never know the full story without talking to the people involved, but for many of us, we don’t even care. It’s easier just to scroll along liking and commenting on these images and stories without seeing the bigger picture.
Louise Delage had the perfect life on Instagram and quickly acquired a viral following. But her followers never noticed all the warning signs staring them in the face.
Over the past ten or fifteen years, social media has totally changed the face of society and how we interact with each other. While Facebook has held out as the most popular network for some time now, other websites and apps have popped up to fill the void and offer more variety to users.
One of these platforms is Instagram: the image-centric app that allows us to easily take in the visual aspects of our friends’ and celebrities’ lives alike without having to filter through other content like statuses.
Initially launched in 2010, Instagram had over 700 million users as of April 2017.
Who do you follow?
The Life of Louise
Everybody follows somebody like Louise Delage.
Whether you follow hundreds of strangers or only your closest friends and family, we all know the struggle of having that *one friend* who racks up the likes like nobody’s business. Is it their hashtags? Their filters? Or is their personal brand just perfectly on point?
That’s what many people found themselves wondering after Louise Delage arrived on the Insta-scene back in August. Perfectly-coiffed hair, trendy shirt, natural background, and drink in hand, she was a sight to behold, another beautiful girl on Instagram. And her fans loved it.
Day after day, week after week, Louise shared her glamorous life with her followers (111,000 at the time of this article). A chic, 25-year-old Parisian, Louise lived the perfect life.
Roaming the streets and parks of Paris, her cute and spacious apartment, trips to Brittany and the Mediterranean, carnivals, fancy dinners, trendy brunches, even her desk job seemed cool. Her profile was filled with hashtags like #mytinyatlas, #instapassport, #liveauthentically, and #neverstopexploring. Hers was an escape that so many of us longed for on the other side of our screens.
There was just one thing we were all missing.
