Did she really believe that he was sick?
Kaylene Bowen-Wright brought her eight-year-old son Christopher to a Dallas-area hospital in November claiming that he just had as seizure. The medical staff checked him out and didn’t find evidence of a seizure though they did note that the child was shaking. Believing that his shaking was caused intentionally, they called Child Protective Services to check out the situation.
Dr. Suzanne Dakil wrote in the CPS petition, “I am very concerned that mother has moved from exaggerating symptoms to inducing symptoms.” After an investigation into the mother and son, 34-year-old Kaylene was arrested and her three children taken away.
Christopher was born in 2009. At only 11 days old, Kaylene declared that he had a milk allergy, and doctors inserted a feeding tube into the infant. That was just the beginning of his odd medical history. According to CPS documents uncovered by the Star-Telegram, Christopher was subjected to 323 doctor visits from 2009 to 2016.
Kaylene somehow convinced doctors that young Christopher needed a wheelchair and full-time oxygen. He was forced to have over a dozen unnecessary surgeries which caused him to catch three near-fatal infections. She attempted to put him on lung transplant waiting list while he was in hospice care for what Kaylene said was cancer. She also managed to raise thousands of dollars online saying that the boy had arteriovenous malformation.
Kaylene was charged with injury to a child with serious bodily harm in early December of this year. It turns out that other doctors had complained about her treatment of the child in years past, but CPS dismissed the claims. Christopher has since been freed from his oxygen tubes and feeding tube. He is eating regularly and appears to be perfectly healthy.
The boy’s father Ryan Crawford is seeking custody of his son, and he’s horrified that his child was given so much unneeded medical attention that it nearly ended his life. Ryan claimed that he tried to convince a series of judges that the mother was abusing him with medical treatment starting back in 2012, but she was able to keep custody because she claimed the boy was terminally ill.
He said that she would tell the judges in all of their cases, “Christopher is dying. The father doesn’t need to be around because he doesn’t know to take care of him.”
“It’s horrible for my son, or any kid because obviously, my son is not the only one that has had to go through this type of torture,” Ryan told the Star-Telegram.
Kayelen seemed to be exhibiting symptoms of factitious disorder imposed on another disorder, formerly Munchausen by proxy. In this disorder, a person makes up medical disorders about another person so that they can seek attention and sympathy from others.
The Ballad of Gypsy Rose
One of the worst cases of this particular disorder was perpetuated by Dee Dee Blancharde. Dee Dee claimed that her daughter Gypsy Rose was ill with a number of different disorders. Dee Dee forced her healthy daughter to remain in a wheelchair at all times or lay in bed. She took Gypsy Rose out of school and constantly brought her to the emergency room making claims about her health that weren’t true. Dee Dee conned government and charitable organizations into basically paying for all of their living expenses, and they even received a Habitat for Humanity home.
As Gypsy aged, she tried several times to escape her mother’s abuse to no avail. She later claimed that her mom would severely beat her for trying to tell people she was perfectly healthy. Gypsy’s only outlet was the internet, and she carried on an online relationship with a man named Nicholas Godejohn.
Nicholas hatched a scheme to murder Dee Dee so that he could take Gypsy Rose away with him. With Gypsy’s help, he stabbed Dee Dee to death in her home on June 12, 2015. Gypsy Rose and Nicholas fled only to be captured and charged with the murder.
Gypsy was abused and confined her whole life by her mother, then she became a part of a murder plot. She is now serving a 10-year prison sentence.
