What were they thinking?
We’re facing a somewhat strange and unique period of time when it comes to social justice. Although feminism and various equal rights movements have been making considerable strides for progress in the past few decades, there are those who criticize equality movements for being too critical of humor and for perpetuating a so-called “P.C. culture” that doesn’t allow people to be themselves.
However, there are some things that are just wrong; outwardly mocking an entire ethnic group falls into that category. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the Serbian women’s volleyball team did in this offensive photo — and it’s got the world talking.
In Poor Taste
When the image of the Serbian women’s volleyball began circulating the Internet, it became pretty clear that the team didn’t think it through before they decided on the pose.
It’s causing people to reassess what it really means to go too far when it comes to social consciousness. Even though many people have criticized equality movements for being overly sensitive, this picture brings the fact that there’s still a need for social justice to light.
The Image in Question
The image was taken right after Serbia defeated Poland, securing their place in 2018 FIVB Women’s World Championship, which is located… in Japan.
It’s important to understand that, while all countries seem to be finding themselves grappling with social justice, America’s struggles with equality movements and “P.C. culture” are not necessarily what every country is experiencing.
Global sports, such as volleyball and soccer, have dealt with racism throughout the years and are constantly bringing to light that some things can be considered more offensive in one country than in another. Fans continue to push back against the racism they perceive at player and structural levels, but it’s clear that this will be a long-term issue.
In fact, this image isn’t the first time a similar pose was taken in global sports.
