We don't deserve Mikey Bones
Now that that bomb cyclone has passed us by and things are a little more bearable on the East Coast, it’s time to reflect on the madness of the past week. With everything looking as bleak as possible on the news these days, it was about time something nice happened during a segment, but no one expected it to go down quite like this. As if brought forth from an SNL sketch or some alternate universe version of The Jersey Shore where people do each other favors instead of get blackout drunk every night, Mikey Bones has appeared to cheer us all up a bit and restore our faith in humanity.
A new hero in town
Like Ken Bone before him, Mike Flint of Neptune, New Jersey is bringing joy to people across the nation. The now-nationally recognized hero brought joy to a New York NBC affiliate newscaster last week right when she (and the rest of us) needed it most. Amid record low temperatures and snowfall across the Northeast, newscasters from Maine to Florida were sent out to brave the elements all in the name of showing us just how bad it was out there. One man from the Jersey Shore wasn’t having it.
After an early morning plea for the coffee shop across from their shooting location to open went ignored, Mike Flint jumped into action. “If they’re out here, I’m helping,” he apparently thought, and he took it upon himself to brighten at least one newscaster’s day.
In the middle of her coverage from Monmouth, New Jersey, Tracie Strahan was surprised by a man she lovingly dubbed “Mikey Bones,” who came to the rescue with hot coffee in the middle of her newscast. While not much is known about the Neptune Native (and believe me, I tired hard to find him), those of us who saw him on TV know one thing: We love him! From Instagram to Twitter and more, people can’t get enough of the unabashedly “Jersey” hero who saved the day last week.
The clip starts predictably enough, with Tracie Strahan letting viewers know that her crew has run into another person out in the storm despite warnings for residents to stay inside until the snow and wind let up. That’s when we meet the man ― the now-legend ― Mike Flint a.k.a. Mikey Bones. Armed with his truck, a camo jacket, a giant thermos, an ear warmer, and an accent that could put Snooki to shame, Mike “put his truck in low-gear and stayed out of the snow drifts” all in the name of bringing coffee to Tracie and her crew. In case you were wondering, it “took 10 minutes longer than usual, though!”
He goes on to discuss his experience in the storm with some signature Jersey-style flair, saying that people in Jersey know what they’re about and how to deal with a storm: “Gotta go get the milk, the eggs ― the milk, the eggs, and the bread, you know? But that’s pretty much it. We grew up here, you know? We know what’s coming, you know what I mean?” Then, the news’ newest buddies crack open his industrial, sticker-covered thermos (“the best product [Mikey’s] ever bought!”) and joke while sharing some hot coffee in the cold wind. It’s heartwarming to say the least.
And viewers noticed.
“@tstrahan4NY made Mikey Bones a legend today,” Twitter user @montroni wrote.
“Every single piece of the video is hilarious. From the coffee addicted weather lady to the hero Mikey Bones,” @RyanEMurray chimed in about the impromptu segment.
All I can say is that I, too, love Mikey Bones. He’s the hero we need right now.
