They were rejected by society, but found comfort with each other
Violet and Daisy Hilton
Two of the leading ladies of Freak Show were Dot and Bette Tattler, portrayed wonderfully by Sarah Paulson. They were based on the real-life Hilton twins, who were conjoined twins.
While Dot and Bette were two heads with one body, their real-life counterparts were fused at the hip. Originally from England, they emigrated to America where they made quite a name for themselves playing instruments in vaudeville shows.
They both married gay actors and died a few days apart from the flu. You can see the real Hilton sisters in the movie Freaks.
Johnny Eck, another person reimagined on Freaks, had a slew of nicknames because he was born without the lower half of his body. Besides being on stage he was an artist, musician, photographer, illusionist, and more.
On American Horror Story, we see another person with his condition, sacral agenesis. Rose Siggins played Legless Suzi on the show. She died in 2015.
Better known as “Sealo, the Seal Boy”, Stanley was afflicted with phocomelia, also known as “seal limbs.” The condition causes extreme shortening of the arms that ones hands pretty much protrude out of the shoulders. He amazingly could function normally and didn’t let his condition get in the way of living.
On AHS we see Mat Fraser as “The Illustrated Seal” (because of his many tattoos). He said, “I’m powerful and awesome and I have these and I’m a freak and I’m an actor and I’m a freak actor, playing a freak and it’s awesome.”
