What's your scary hometown story?
Hairy Man Road
There is a road in a wooded area near where I live and the street is literally called “Hairy Man Road”. Legend goes that there was a kid who was separated from his family when they were trying to escape some bad weather (in the 1800’s). He ended up surviving alone in the woods and terrorized people who would come through. Eventually he was trampled to death by some people/horses passing by that he tried to scare. I forget how weird the name of the road is until I have to say it out loud. There are Hairy Man Festivals each year in my town, and the hairiest man legit wins a prize. So weird lmao (bren303)
My Class With Comrade
One of the teachers at a local school in the 80s was a Soviet spy. Whether that’s true or not, I can confirm that there is indeed a declassified Soviet map of my entire town, including the military base, from the 80s. It’s a super detailed map too – more detailed than contemporary American maps. (ImAGeekNotANerd)

The Cult Next Door
There’s a church in a suburb town of Dallas with no real windows, and if you go there at night, there’s always at least 1 car, sometimes 2 parked in the entrance and really spooky choir music audible. The doors are all metal, and the 10″ish square windows in the doors have that shatter-proof wire mesh in them. Keep in mind that this church is not in a terribly bad area. Not great, but not bad.
Rumor is that a woman walked into a nearby convenience store covered in blood, and said that they tried to sacrifice her. No idea if it’s true, but I used to live near the church, and I can confirm the car(s), spooky music, and overbuilt door bits of the story [….]
Edit: Another bit I forgot; I was told by multiple sources that during the time school lets out, they used to sit in the parking lot and harass students who cut through their parking lot. They’re on the corner of two major residential streets, so foot traffic was heavy.
What makes it even creepier is that it’s about 150-200 yards from one end of a semi-secluded creekside walking path that had a bit of a bad reputation; so much so that the city sprung for small streetlamps to be installed along its entire length about 4-6 years ago.
Just lots of weird goings-on in that whole section of the neighborhood.
Edit 2: Holy sh*t, I just looked them up and there’s a few mentions online of it being some kind of cult. I’m definitely checking this out.
Edit 3: […] A Google search reveals creepy videos from inside, mentions of the “pastor” being a former televangelist fired for being a whack-job. Very weird.
Edit 5: […] A member of this church amputated her child’s arms because “God told her to.” This really is some kind of f**ked-up cult, operating in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Scary sh*t, since I lived within a block of here back when I was a kid. (AllanJH)
