Money doesn't buy class
Taking a stand
I wish we as a country could just decide to stop tipping. Waiting tables would either become better paying jobs, or restaurants would fall apart with the kind of help they can find that will work for minimum wage. I’d be fine with either of those. I just don’t want to be responsible for making or breaking your night.
I don’t want to tip 20% for someone to hold a tap for 6 seconds and put a napkin on the bar. I don’t want a s***ty look from a waitress because I didn’t tip her on the bar tab I had moved to my table. I don’t want to hear stories from my waiter friends about how Russians, blacks and old people are cheapskates.
Nearly every transaction we go through is agreed upon before we enter into it at a set price that both parties are happy with… why does this third party have to depend on the customer’s generosity to pay their bills? Why should people from other countries that don’t tip be made to feel like pieces of s*** because they don’t know or don’t agree with our stupid custom?
The answer is, “this is the way it is, so be a piece of s*** and don’t tip, or be normal and tip 18%.” (Tobro)
I’m currently a waiter as my second job for side case (and just in general helping out my family business) for a Chinese restaurant[…]
A group of 6 people came in, and wanted to get a glimpse of our menu seeing if it fits their taste before sitting down. I gave them a few minutes and went to take care of other things before doing so.
I get back to them after a few minutes and saw their facial expressions were different. They seem a little bit mad. I approached them.
“Have we decided? Do you guys want to take a seat there?” as I pointed out towards conjoined tables meant for bigger parties.
“You guys are an extremely racist business” one of the ladies said.
“Excuse me?” I replied.
Then she takes the menu, and points at the print that says:
15% GRATUITY MAY BE ADDED TO PARTIES OF 6 OR MORE!
It’s fairly standard practice in the restaurant environment but this lady wasn’t having any of it.
“What do you mean, MAY be charged to parties of 6 or more. Does that mean you will automatically charge gratuity to whoever you guys like or don’t like? I bet you’ll charge us gratuity because we’re brown! That’s BULLS***.” She yelled at me.
“Ma’m. We put in print that we may charge gratuity to tables of more than 6 people, but if it’s 1 adult and 5 children, it wouldn’t be fair. That’s why we put may and use our better judgement given the circumstances.”
“Whatever, you’re an idiot. Just either you charge or you don’t.” She says and stormed out the door. Her family followed and I’m left there thinking if that really just happened.
Good thing they left, that was guaranteed 0 in tip, and rudeness all around! (ItzSam91)
