It's fan theory time!
Something’s off here
Then, once Friends ended and Joey began, Brent Spiner made a cameo playing himself. Digital Spy points out that this is the key to the whole thing.
If we agree that Friends and Joey exist in the same universe (which spin-offs usually do) and that Brent Spiner (the actor who was on Star Trek) exists in Los Angeles in Joey, then Brent Spiner must exist in the Friends world as well.
Thus, the “executive” interviewing Rachel must be actor Brent Spiner playing a character.
Joey or “Joey?”
Okay, now that we have that out of the way, here’s the important part of the theory: if Brent Spiner was an actor playing someone in the Friends world while existing as himself in Joey, then it’s theoretically possible that Joey Tribbiani (the actor) was playing “Joey Tribbiani,” friend of Phoebe, Monica, Ross, and the rest in Friends.
All the Questions
Sure, it’s a stretch, but if you don’t think about it too hard, it’s kind of compelling for a minute. Right? I mean, the biggest problem, as previously mentioned, is “Why?” But other than that, it kind of really holds up…
Then again, why would actor Joey spend 10+ years playing a fictionalized version of himself in these random people’s lives?
Was this a Truman Show type situation?
Was Joey in Joey secretly an undercover cop turned actor?
Was Friends really a show within a show?
Does that make the version of Days of Our Lives in Friends a show within a show within a show?
TBH, it was probably a continuity error, but it does test the limits of the space-(air)time continuum, no?
