Down the hatch...
If your trusted religious leader asked you to jump off of a bridge to prove your love and devotion to God, would you do it? Probably not because it’s dangerous. And you also wouldn’t necessarily believe that it’s truly the way to prove that you have faith. But the parishioners at one church were more than happy to ingest deadly poison just because their minister said that it was the only way to show their devotion. Is he a direct line to God, or is he a false prophet putting people in extreme danger?
Of all of the millions of religious people on the Earth, a few of them like to show their devotion to whomever they’re praying to by doing death-defying acts. Praying just isn’t enough for them.
In America, dancing with venomous snakes is a popular method of dangerous devotion in some isolated towns, for example.
Christians typically believe that the body doesn’t last forever, but the spirit will live on eternally. With death comes an everlasting life on another plane of existence. But they don’t typically like to hasten their deaths.
