This whole story is a trip
Conception stories aren’t the sort of things that people share. There’s no meet-cute for sperm and egg. We all know the basic details of the ways that babies are formed, so we don’t feel the need to ask about it in the same way we ask couples how they came together in the first place.
However, one teen girl in Lesotho had a conception so rare and interesting that it was shared around the world by scientists writing in medical journals. The girl went to a local hospital showing signs of being in labor in spite of the fact that it should have been impossible for her to get pregnant.
“Inspection of the vulva showed no vag**a, only a shallow skin dimple,” wrote authors in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
However, they went ahead with the operation and delivered a healthy baby boy. Obviously, the doctors were at a loss. So, they began investigating the girl’s strange case. What they found was an incredible example of Murphy’s Law (and the hardiness of sperm).
A Brutal Conception
The doctors realized that the girl had been admitted to the hospital over 270 days before the delivery with knife wounds to the abdomen. Doctors were left to guess that the sperm entered her body via the cuts.
“Just before she was stabbed in the abdomen she had practiced fellatio with her new boyfriend and was caught in the act by her former lover. The fight with knives ensued,” the study’s authors wrote. “A plausible explanation for this pregnancy is that spermatozoa gained access to the reproductive organs via the injured gastrointestinal tract.”
Even after the findings were published, doctors had a hard time believing the story. Though several admitted that the story was possible, they were taken aback at the unlikeliness of the pregnancy.
“Here’s an unbelievable set of coincidences,” Dr. Richard Paulson, head of the University of Southern California Fertility Program in Los Angeles, told ABC News. “But it’s totally plausible.”
“Sperm are pretty hardy,” said Paulson. “It’s a long way from the stomach into the lower abdomen, it’s a heck of a trip, but they made it…You just need sperm somewhere in the area of an egg.”
Others doubt the tale, saying that a woman with no vag would have accumulated blood in her abdomen, which would make a pregnancy highly unlikely, despite the fact that she still had sexual organs.
“She’d have pain all the time and would have a stomach full of blood all the time, and would have to be operated on, or she would eventually die,” said Dr. Sherman J. Silber — director of the infertility center of Saint Louis at St. Luke’s Hospital in Missouri — in an interview with ABC.
Still, assuming that the doctors were telling the truth about this girl actually giving birth to a baby boy, what other options are there? According to the evidence (aka a human), it seems like a teen really was impregnated thanks to the worst luck in the world and some fairly hardy genetic material. As unlikely as it all seems to us from the outside, this baby was conceived on the end of a knife.
