Though there haven’t been many studies done on parents killing children, it is believed that the rate of filicide is higher in America than other countries. USA Today found that “more than three decades of FBI homicide data shows that on average, 450 children are killed every year by their parents.” 75% of these children will be under the age of five.
Parents who kill their kids are usually having a mental episode, seeking revenge on a partner, or don’t want to care for the child anymore.
A Child Saved
In this case, the mother wasn’t able to kill the child because good citizens intervened. The strangers were able to grab the child and wrap him in warm clothing until the authorities arrived. He was treated at the hospital and released to his father’s care.
The mother was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and failing to provide the necessities of life. It’s unknown why she was trying to kill her child, but she was most likely suffering from a mental illness.
