An X-Ray Advantage
X-Rays and ultrasounds are often used to count the number of unborn puppies in a dog’s womb. X-Ray imaging does have a slight advantage for this, because it can only be used in the later stages of pregnancy to protect the health of the puppies.
Ultrasound Useful in Early Stages
Ultrasound is really only useful during the earlier stages, and requires more skill and dexterity to find the animals, but with a skilled technician, they can actually be spotted earlier.
Count the Skulls not the Spines
When counting the number of pups or kittens you’ve got to be sure to count the skulls, not the spines. The pups can be hiding behind one and other or very close to the mom’s spine. This can cause the technician to miss the count, leaving everyone with some surprise puppies.
